Overview

The SPY Portable Handheld Imager (SPY-PHI) is a handheld fluorescence imaging system from Stryker. It uses SPY Fluorescence Imaging technology so that surgeons can see blood flow in vessels and the related tissue perfusion during plastic, microsurgical, reconstructive and gastrointestinal procedures. Its compact, lightweight design suits the operating room as well as smaller spaces such as ambulatory surgery centres.

The imager gives a 1080p image at 60 frames per second, designed for realistic colour reproduction. It combines the fluorescence signal with white-light imaging in real time, with White Light, Overlay, SPY Fluorescence and Color Segmented Fluorescence (CSF) modes. A flexible working distance and wide imaging field let perfusion be assessed from a range of viewing distances, and ambient light immunity lets the operator work without disrupting activity around the surgical table.

Four buttons on the handle switch between white light and SPY fluorescence, focus the image, change the visualisation mode and open the menu of the Video Processor Illuminator (VPI), which handles image capture and records. On the Stryker 1788 platform, SPY-PHI is used with the VPI to visualise perfusion in open surgery, and it is also supported on the 1688 AIM 4K platform.
